We are deeply saddened to announce that one of our beloved program horses, Merlin, has passed away at the age of 25. He was a talented dressage partner, a trustworthy lesson horse and a cornerstone of BDF’s work. Though he is no longer with us, we will always keep him in our hearts and memories.
In his early years, Merlin competed in the International Federation for Equestrian Sports Junior and Young Rider Championships with his partner Abby Pritchard, who greatly helped develop him into the amazing horse that he was. As his dressage career came to an end, BDF was blessed with his presence at the farm. We extend a heartfelt condolence and sincere appreciation to Carole Ludwig for allowing Merlin to spend his final years with us.
We were lucky enough to work alongside this gentle, kind and powerful horse. He bonded with countless hippotherapy students, helping them develop core strength and flexibility and contributing to their improvements over time. His relaxed demeanor made him perfect for our interactive games, program shows, sensory trail adventures and therapy sessions.
Merlin’s passing has deeply affected everyone who knew and loved him, and his impact will never be forgotten.
“[The loss of Merlin] is heart-wrenching,” said Cat Veeren, BDF’s founder. “Some horses do therapeutic programs because they are obedient or just good-natured, but Merlin knew he was doing something special.”
